Application forms & custom fields
Every job on hire.page has an application form. Beyond the default fields (name, email), you can add custom fields to surface real signal from candidates.
Why custom fields?
A PDF resume tells you what someone wants you to believe. Custom fields let you ask for proof — a GitHub profile, a portfolio link, a specific written answer, or a work sample. Every response is a real data point.
Adding custom fields
When creating or editing a job, go to the Application tab. Click Add Field to choose a field type:
- Short text — single-line answers (LinkedIn URL, location, availability)
- Long text — multi-paragraph responses (cover letter, project description, role-specific question)
- URL — validated link fields (GitHub, portfolio, personal website, Dribbble)
- File upload — documents, portfolios, or other attachments (resume PDF, design samples)
Field settings
Each field has:
- Label — the question or field name candidates see
- Required / Optional — required fields block submission if left blank
Reordering fields
Drag fields to reorder them. The order here is the order candidates see on the application form.
Previewing the form
Click Preview Application to see exactly what candidates see. Check that labels are clear and the form flows logically before publishing the job.
Tips for great application forms
- Keep it short — 3–5 custom fields maximum. Long forms reduce completion rates.
- Ask for proof — "Link to a project you're proud of" beats "Describe your experience."
- Be specific — "60-second Loom intro video (URL)" is clearer than "Tell us about yourself."
- Make URLs required for portfolio roles — so you always get a link, not just a mention.
